Cascade: Sustainable Growth for Cascade Environmental Resource Group

Publish Date: January 2010

Cascade also successfully sub-contracted with Coast Mountain Excavations as environmental monitors for the site preparation of the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Cascade didn’t develop into the company it is today without a few growing pains. According to Williamson, size matters in his line of work.

"If you aren’t big, you will need to discount," he explains. "We knew we were competing against much larger firms with better connections. So we were appreciative of the work we got and strove to over-deliver." As a smaller company with lower overhead costs, Cascade was able accomplish this feat through local knowledge, maximizing efficiencies and expanding staffing levels to meet the needs of the task at hand.

Although working for a complex entity like VANOC presented challenges, Williamson says that 2010 work had "immeasurable" benefits.

"That kind of opportunity comes along once in a lifetime and we certainly are glad we had the chance to be involved."

Williamson says their short-term success has been enormous and the long-term success looks very promising. But he says Cascade’s 2010 success can be measured in more than just financial terms.

"The work we completed was hugely rewarding and we felt that we were making a meaningful contribution to the Games."

As a company that values and specializes in sustainable development, Cascade was able to identify and protect significant habitat features during site planning and design of major projects for 2010.

Williamson is confident that the experience gained from 2010-related work will help the company attain its goal of continued growth in the Adventure Tourism sector with a focus on international projects.
